GOVERNOR'S HONORS ACADEMY

Explore the future of Appalachia alongside accomplished faculty, researchers and students during a two-week summer program on the campus of West Virginia University.

The 2025 Governor's Honors Academy will be held July 12 - 26 in Morgantown, West Virginia. Young scholars will participate in academic and extracurricular activities that explore this year’s theme, Appalachia Envisioned.

Through a sustainability lens, they will imagine a society and a West Virginia that honors the past and its culture as it adapts, progresses and becomes more incorporated into the larger global community


Programming

Throughout the two-week program, participants will be engaged in a variety of daily classes and workshops as well as social and cultural activities led by WVU professors and professional resident staff. Innovative and cutting-edge experiences include:

  • Engineering

  • Health sciences

  • Business

  • Computer sciences

  • Media and communications

  • Arts

Required Qualifications

Students must meet all of the following eligibility criteria to be considered:

  • Must be a current high school student in West Virginia with plans to attend next school year.

  • Must be a West Virginia resident.

  • Must be a junior at the time of application.

  • Must not graduate before January 2025.

  • Must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 or be in the top 10% of the class.

  • Must not have transcribed grades below a C.

  • Must satisfy all immunization requirements according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR). Non-public school and homeschooled students must provide proof of immunizations.

The school counselor must be involved in the application process for GHA. Please provide sufficient time for school personnel to secure the required documents for the application.

Within the application, students must acquire one teacher recommendation. Please provide sufficient notice to teachers before applying.

Preferred Qualifications

Students must meet all of the following eligibility criteria to be considered:

  • Achieve a composite score at or above the 90th percentile on the PSAT, SAT or another standardized test OR

  • Attain a score of three (3) or higher on an AP exam.
