The West Virginia Governor’s School for Mathematics and Science (GSMS) is a summer residential program providing academic enrichment in the areas of science and math for current 7th and 8th graders living in and attending school in West Virginia. In summer 2012, there are two different sessions for students who are currently in the seventh grade (often referred to as "rising 8th graders"). The session dates are June 17- June 26 and June 27- July 6.
Two groups of forty-two rising 8th graders students will work at West Virginia University to learn the math and science necessary to complete their own research projects, which will be based around this year's theme of "All the Fun at the Fair.”
Students will be given the background necessary to succeed in these projects by using the "jigsaw" model of cooperative learning. Each member of a research team will attend two inquiry-based classes during the first half of the session, one math-based, the other science-based. These classes in mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry and engineering will give the students the tools they need to work together to produce a final project during the second half of the session.
In addition to the classes and projects, students will have recreational time every afternoon with at least three activities to choose from each day. These include nature walks, bookstore visits, team sports, board games, and trips to the Mountainlair Student Union. Evening activities will include science lectures by WVU faculty, visits to the Student Recreation Center and Mountainair bowling alley and arcade, swimming parties, outdoor movies on the Monongahela River wharf, and a student dance.
Students will live in Honors Hall, the newest and most comfortable residence hall on campus. They will be housed in double rooms, with two rooms sharing restroom facilities. The Honors Hall is next door to Summit Café, the dining hall where all meals will be served.
The many resources of West Virginia University are at the disposal of GSMS faculty, staff, and students. Faculty will be recruited from public schools and institutions of higher learning throughout West Virginia, while mentors are WVU students themselves.
