WVU is extremely proud of its tradition of producing students who have been recognized nationally and internationally for their accomplishments. The key is planning ahead and getting started early in your college career.
Rhodes Scholarship (25 WVU Winners)
The Rhodes Scholarship provides for two years of postgraduate study at the University of Oxford—one of the preeminent institutions of higher learning in the world. Students apply in the fall of their senior year. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and not beyond the age of 24. Criteria include an outstanding academic record, significant leadership and/or literary achievements, community service, and a concern for the body as well as the mind. Goldwater Scholarship (26 WVU Winners)
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education program is for college juniors and seniors with a demonstrated interest in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. It covers eligible expenses for up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support, and seniors are eligible for one year. Applicants must be a full-time sophomore or junior, have a B average, rank in the upper fourth of their class, and be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, or U.S. national. The deadline is February 1. Truman Scholarship (17 WVU Winners)
This scholarship is intended for students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for a career in government or public service. Applications are accepted in the junior year. Winners receive a $30,000 stipend, which may be applied to their senior year and the first two years of graduate school. Criteria include a record of scholastic achievement, leadership, community service, and some form of internship related to the government. Fulbright Fellowship
This fellowship offers graduating seniors, graduate students at all levels, and those wishing to further their careers in the creative and performing arts, the chance to study and do research for one year, in more than 70 countries. Students in almost any discipline may apply. A good GPA and evidence of adaptability are required. Most host countries expect candidates to have the equivalent language experience of two years of college study. A proposal of a project that can be accomplished in the host country in one year must be submitted, along with an application, by September 15. Marshall Scholarship (Two WVU Winners)
The Marshall Scholarship offers the opportunity to study for at least two years in a university in the United Kingdom. Students can apply in any field in which a degree is granted in a United Kingdom university. Applicants must be U.S. citizens between 18 and 25 years of age and have a first degree by the time of residence in the British school. A minimum 3.7 GPA is required. Udall Scholarship (Two WVU Winners)
This $5,000 scholarship is given to outstanding rising juniors and seniors with excellent academic records in fields related to the environment, Native American health care, or tribal public policy. Gates Fellowship
The Gates Cambridge Trust will cover costs at the University of Cambridge in England to pursue a second-year bachelor as an affiliated student, one year of postgraduate courses, or research leading to a Ph.D. Applicants should hold an Honors degree from a university, be admitted in the normal way to Cambridge, and be under 30 years of age.
